Indo-European Practice and Historical Methodology

چکیده
One element of the recent controversy over historical methodology set o by Greenberg (1987)'s classi cation of American Indian languages has been his reliance on super cial lexical resemblances, with no attempt to establish phonological correspondences and no evidence from submerged morphology. Proponents of this methodology argue (Greenberg 1949, 1987, 1990, 1991 Ruhlen 1987) that this is the methodology used to establish the IndoEuropean language family, and that the success of these methods in the Indo-European case shows them to be reliable.

Problems in-Computerized Historical Linguistics: the Old Cornish Lexicon
This work represents an attempt to utilize the computer in solving problems in historical linguistics. The corpus upon which it operates is not a language but a recently published etymological dictionary of Old Cornish. 1 Any observations regarding the scarcity or inaccuracy of the data utilized are, therefore, irrelevant, as far as the present paper is concerned. As the dictionary in question ...

In this paper two fundamental myths and the related rituals from archaic India and old Japan are compared. Exploring their close mutual relationship offers the chance of taking another look at comparative mythology in a wholly new way. This is not done in the old Frazerian way, certainly not in the manner of the diffusionists such as Frobenius and Baumann, nor with the Indo-European-centered me...
متن کاملA Comparison of Phylogenetic Reconstruction Methods on an Indo-european Dataset
Researchers interested in the history of the Indo-European family of languages have used a variety of methods to estimate the phylogeny of the family, and have obtained widely differing results. In this paper we explore the reconstructions of the Indo-European phylogeny obtained by using the major phylogeny estimation procedures on an existing database of 336 characters (including lexical, phon...

1 Evolutionary trees The evolutionary history of a taxonomic group, both in biology and in linguistics, is usually represented as a tree. Many of the actual trees that one nds in the literature, both biological and linguistic, are controversial for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the evidence from which a tree could be constructed is meager or ambiguous; very often it is \noisy", so that a tree...
متن کاملPhylogenetics of Indo-European Language families via an Algebro-Geometric Analysis of their Syntactic Structures
Using Phylogenetic Algebraic Geometry, we analyze computationally the phylogenetic tree of subfamilies of the Indo-European language family, using data of syntactic structures. The two main sources of syntactic data are the SSWL database and Longobardi’s recent data of syntactic parameters. We compute phylogenetic invariants and likelihood functions for two sets of Germanic languages, a set of ...
